09 Jun Summer Merry Weather Quilt
I decided that I needed a new quilt to take with us when my family goes out for some summer fun. Whether we are headed to a picnic at the park, a trip to the beach, or sitting on the soccer field watching my teenage daughter’s final season of outdoor soccer, my new quilt will need to be versatile. I decided to make my Merry Weather quilt, which is a great way to use a lovely mix of fabrics.
I chose the Flowerland collection by Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society because every print screams summer fun to me. The lovely folks at Missouri Star Quilt Co. sent me this fat quarter bundle and I am absolutely smitten with it!
The Merry Weather quilt sews up very quickly with easy strip piecing. I made a little reel of how easy it is to piece on Instagram here.
After strip piecing, the smaller units are sewn together and you end up with beautiful stacks of blocks that look like this…
Once my blocks were all pieced, I assembled them together in a grid pattern, and then made my quilt sandwich (my least favourite part of the process). I always think a quilt sandwich looks so satisfying… like it’s the great in-betweener stage of the piecing and the quilting. Where you can just stand back and say “ahhhhh” as you admire your accomplishment and dream up how you’re going to take on the next step.
I traced and cut out an orange peel shaped template from a piece of saved plastic packaging from my new yoga mat. (It was the perfect weight plastic!) Then I used the template with my Hera marker to trace my quilting lines vertically and horizontally across the whole quilt top.
Oooh la la, how pretty is that!!!
I used a Ruby Star Society print from the First Light collection as my backing fabric. I picked it up for a steal when a local fabric shop was blowing it out at 75% off!! It matches perfectly with the Flowerland collection too!
We’ve had a slew of dismal days, weather-wise, here on the prairies so far this year. So on the first nice Saturday of the season I took my quilt to our back deck for some photos with my new plants.
I can’t tell you how excited I am to pack this quilt up in the trunk of our car for our family’s summer adventures!
